The difference between a feature and a benefit

• a feature is “what something is”

• a benefit is “what users can do or accomplish with it”

E.g., a smartphone

Most people don’t care about the characteristics or qualities of a product/service. They care about the advantages or outcomes of using that product/service.

So how do you convert cold features into irresistible benefits that catch your target audience’s attention?

3 easy ways to turn features into benefits that sell

#1 Highlight the problem-solving capabilities of a product

Knowing and understanding your audience’s pain points by heart gives you insights into what makes them tick. Based on that, you can write your marketing copy following the:

• PROBLEM → SOLUTION approach

E.g., #1:

Feature: password manager software feature that generates strong passwords

Benefits: you're protected from cyberattacks and identity theft, major concerns for many internet users.

E.g., #2:

Feature: a streaming service's feature of personalized recommendations

Benefits: you can discover new content that matches your interests without spending time and effort searching for something to watch

#2 Appeal to the emotional benefits of a product

When appealing to the emotional benefits of a product, you focus on how your product/service can make your customers feel rather than just its functional features.

This involves tapping into your customers' desires, motivations, and aspirations and underlining how the new feature can make them happier, more fulfilled, or more confident.

For example, suppose your product can make customers feel more successful, wealthy, etc. In that case, you build an emotional connection with your customers, potentially making them stick to your brand/product/service longer.

E.g., #1,

Feature: a mobile phone feature of a high-quality camera

Benefits: you can capture and share important moments with loved ones (= which makes the user feel more connected and fulfilled)

E.g., #2

Feature: Duolingo's gamified approach

Benefits: Duolingo helps users improve their skills and expand their knowledge, making them smarter and more skillful. They allow users to communicate with others and broaden their horizons by building relationships with people worldwide. They underline that learning can be fun and engaging, providing the user with a sense of achievement and satisfaction.

#3 Emphasize the unique selling proposition of a product

Aka, make the user feel like there’s no other product/service on the market.

E.g., #1,

Chanel has emphasized the unique selling proposition of their luxury fashion products by highlighting their high-quality materials and craftsmanship. They showcase their products with the finest materials, ensuring durability and longevity. They also highlight how their products are made with expert craftsmanship, making them stand out from other luxury brands.

E.g., #2,

Tesla has emphasized the unique selling proposition of their electric cars by highlighting their eco-friendliness and advanced technology. They showcase their emissions-free cars, providing a sustainable transportation option for environmentally-conscious consumers. This is a powerful strategy as it helps potential customers make informed decisions.

You can increase your social proof by collaborating with influencers in your industry with a large audience. They can increase your brand awareness and trust among their followers, who may be more likely to make a purchase based on their recommendation.

e.g., if your product was recommended by a top influencer known by your target audience, you can mention that on your social media or landing page.

#3 Your results

The best social proof that can increase your credibility is your results.

e.g., this week, one of my posts generated 89K impressions, and here’s the post. This is social proof = showing instead of telling. Since my audience is also interested in tips on how they can generate engagement on LinkedIn, my results make them trust my advice and boosts my credibility.

The key to writing actionable content that helps your audience

When writing content, you have 2 options:

1. throwing some random articles on a blog, publishing a few LinkedIn posts, etc., to check those quarterly objectives your manager gave you.

2. create the most actionable content out there and give it away for free - even if sometimes it might be worth it .

If you're team #1, reading further might be useless, as I don’t have any advice to give you. 😅 But if you’re team #1 and want to switch to team #2, this could help you get started.

95% of the content “tells,” doesn’t “show” …

The article went through the mistakes people might be making on LinkedIn.

And that’s it.

• lots of theory

• 0 examples or screenshots

Like this article, millions of examples of articles, LinkedIn posts, newsletters, etc., provide very little or no value at all.

Instead, here’s how this article could have been more helpful to the audience.

✅ “3 mistakes you’re probably making on LinkedIn and how to fix them”

• add examples + screenshots for each mistake

• explain why it’s a mistake

• give actionable tips on how to fix each mistake

• end the article with a short checklist of best practices on LinkedIn

This “problem → solution” approach makes your content more actionable and helpful for your audience.

But to provide valuable content to your audience, you need to:

1. have a clear idea of who is your audience

2. understand their struggles/problems/pain points

3. propose a relevant and frictionless solution for them

That’s how you’ll make your content stand out and help your audience succeed in whatever they do.

The number #1 error most marketers do

The more content I read about SaaS products, the more I realize that most marketers/ content creators write for themselves and not for their audiences.

This a harsh statement, but here’s why …

1. As a marketer, you’re in charge of promoting your company’s products or services

2. You focus on what the product or service you have to promote does

3. You underline the most developed features you’ve worked so hard to develop

… and that’s it.

Well, that’s a ❌ wrong approach!

90% of content out there talks about features.

Instead of focusing on features, marketers/content creators should focus on:

✅ BENEFITS/ OUTCOME

= the result users will have by using a product/service

To make it easier for you:

• a feature is “what something is”

• a benefit is “what users can do or accomplish with it”

Examples:

1. Phone Case

• feature: phone case

• benefits/outcome: protects your phone from any fall

2. Umbrella

• features: umbrella made of cloth and wood, wind-resistant

• benefits/outcome: stay dry even in strong rains and winds 

3. lemwarm

• features: automated warm-up and deliverability booster that allows you to personalize your warm-up process and helps you reach a high deliverability score

• benefits/outcome: keep your emails away from the spam folder and make sure your prospects read them

When marketing lemwarm, my team and I focused 100% on what the tool does for the user, so they can understand exactly how lemwarm helps them. Features are important, but your audience doesn’t care about the explanation behind each of them … they just care about what they can achieve with your product/service.

In short, people buy things that can improve their lives, solve their problems, etc. - so make sure your messaging/landing page/tagline/articles focus on “what’s in it for them”, aka on the benefits/outcome.

Here’s what to do when no one engages with your LinkedIn posts

Like your own posts to push them on your network’s feeds.

In the end, you’re the one who writes them, so why not show a bit of support for yourself? 😅

If you’re telling yourself: “I cannot like my posts. That’s too self-centered” or “I might look arrogant if I like my posts,” you might think twice as all top LinkedIn influencers react to their LinkedIn content. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Make sure your content is relevant to your audience.

Your audience will pay attention to your content only if it’s relevant to them. For that, you have to align your posts’ topics with your niche.

Examples:

❌ If I am a copywriter with an audience of copywriters and content creators, I cannot publish a post on creating a hiring process - as it will not be relevant to them.

✅ As a copywriter, by sharing copywriting tips and advice on how people can write and sell better, I can generate more engagement than writing about HR processes.

The easy way to get your audience’s attention:

• Have a clear idea of your audience (who they are, industry, etc.)

• Understand your audience (their pain points, struggles, challenges, etc.)

• Catch their attention by providing solutions + value with your content (share tips, learnings, etc.)

If your topics align with your audience and you still get very little or no engagement, you might need to work on your posts' structures.

Remember that:

• what you write is important

• but how you write it is much more important

No engagement on your posts usually it’s a sign that you don’t engage with other content creators.

Engaging with others on LinkedIn helps you to:

• appear on people’s feeds much more often

• create connections and “LinkedIn friends” (= people who will end up engaging on your posts daily, as a result of being active consistently on their posts)

• position yourself as an expert (= by leaving thoughtful comments)

Pick 10 small - medium - big content influencers and engage daily with their posts. If you do this for 30 days, I bet your engagement + audience will increase each day.

How to grow a personal brand in just 90 days?

1 year ago, I was struggling to build my brand on LinkedIn.

If I were to give you the definition of copywriting, it would sound like this: the process of writing to drive people to make a purchase. 

But I want to save you from the theory and give you exactly what you need to know to write and sell better.

Here are the main important things you need to know about copywriting:

• it’s a conversation between you and one person

• doesn’t include fluff (= unnecessary words)

• it’s short and straightforward 

• it’s clear and easy to get even by a ten y.o. kid

• pushes readers to take action

• focuses on an outcome

I apply these points daily on my LinkedIn posts and the content my team and I create for lemlist. The results? More attention from the readers, more traffic, more sign-ups, more impressions.

4 copywriting mistakes you’re probably making (and how to fix them)

To be good at writing, you don’t need to read all copywriting books out there. You just need to know the things that will make a massive difference in your writing.

Here are the most common mistakes people make when writing content and how to fix them.

#1 You don’t talk directly to your reader

If you talk to everybody, you’ll end up talking to nobody …

When writing, avoid using “I” or other self-centered approaches. Instead, use “you” to address your reader directly. This will make readers relate and connect better to your content.

Two examples:

→ ❌"Every Sunday, I'll send you an email with copywriting tips"
→ ✅ "Every Sunday, YOU'll get an email with copywriting tips"

→ ❌"Here’s how to drive more traffic on a website"
→ ✅ "Here’s how to drive more traffic on YOUR website"

#2 You use smart words

Copywriting is about being understood, not about winning literacy awards …

When you use smart words, you’ll not sound smarter .. just hard to get. 😅 And if your content is difficult to understand, people will not relate to it. They will not get your message or what action you ask them to take.

Use everyday language, write as if you’re talking to a friend and make your text easy to get even by a ten y.o. kid.

Words to use to make your text easy to read and understand:

5 examples of “smart words” to avoid:

→ ❌ Assist
→ ✅ Help

→ ❌ Utilize
→ ✅ Use

→ ❌ Dispatch
→ ✅ Send

→ ❌ Purchase
→ ✅ Buy

→ ❌ Pretentious
→ ✅ Big

#3 You’re not clear enough

A good copy should not raise any questions …

When writing, think about all the objections or questions your audience might have when reading your content. Cover all the details by being specific, clear, and direct.

Examples:

❌ "We help our clients worldwide"
✅ "We help salespeople and marketers from 80+ countries"

❌ "Sales will close soon"
✅ "Sales will close tomorrow at 22:00"

❌ "Get access now"
✅ "Get access now. It’s free"

#4 You use fluff

A good copy is fluff, “bla bla,” and bull💩 free …

Fluff = unnecessary words; words that don’t add any value.

The 1st problem with “fluff” is that … is in 99% of the content we see out there. 😅

The 2nd problem is that it makes the reading heavy, and it’s not always suitable for content that aims to be actionable and straight to the point.

Examples of fluff words to avoid:

❌ Literally
❌ In order to
❌ Absolutely
❌ As a matter of fact

3 LinkedIn posts structures that generate engagement

Before jumping into the structures, keep in mind that 1 year ago, I was here ⬇

Now, I use structures and post templates to share content in a very sharp + clear way and generate 12x more engagement.

How to do that for your own posts?

First, 2 things:

1. On LinkedIn, people don’t read. They scan - that’s why your posts should be visual.

2. Your structure makes the success of your post.

Think about your post on a feed as a chocolate bar on a supermarket shelf. It can be the most delicious chocolate ever, but if the packaging (aka the structure) is not catchy or easy to spot, the chances for you to buy it are small.

Here are 3 LinkedIn posts structures you can test + 3 examples to better get the idea.

Structure #1 → “bad versus good”

This structure is very effective, as it provides value clearly without fluff.

1. You start with the “bad side” so you can boost curiosity on how people can avoid it

2. You go with the “good side” as a way to solve the issues just mentioned in part 1

3. You end up the post with a sharp and crisp conclusion as a key takeaway

PRO TIP → Always add the bad-good examples, so people have real use cases of how they can apply your tips.

Structure #2 → “before and after”

This structure is very catchy visually and can generate a lot of engagement when it’s used for personal posts, as people relate very easily to these topics.

1. You start with how X looked like before.

   E.g.:

   • How your life looked back in the day

   • How people were using LinkedIn

   • How people were applying for jobs, etc.

2. Next, you give the exact number of points, but underlying how X looks like right now

   E.g.:

   • How your life looks now

   • How people are now using LinkedIn

   • How people are now applying for jobs, etc.

3. You end up with a sharp and clear conclusion.

PRO TIP → Keep your sentences 1 line long to make the post very easy to scan.

Structure #3 → “the list”

10 hard truths to remember in 2023

1. planning without executing = 0

2. being busy doesn’t mean being productive

7. showing up every day takes you one step closer to your goals

This year I managed to accomplish more and grow 10x faster by doing 1 thing:

→ have an accountability partner

In short, an accountability partner is:

• someone who pushes you to reach your goals

• someone who can help you stay on track

• someone who can challenge you

It can be your life partner, colleague, best friend, sister, name it.

1. Write down everything you want to accomplish (dream big, ok? 😊)

2. Choose an accountability partner (make sure you both have a cool connection and can communicate openly)

3. Start the accountability game (take your role seriously - you’re there to do great stuff and help others accomplish theirs)
